Security jobs that are well paid and on good terms are much easier to land than what most people make it. Whether it’s a close protection role, security guard, door supervisor, or surveillance operator, the principles are all the same. It’s really not difficult. The issue is that 99% of people put no effort into the job application process whatsoever. So for the 1% that do, finding well paid security jobs is easy. Here are our top ten tips for finding employment once you have completed your training.

Top 10 Tips for Finding Employment

  1. Your CV is the backbone on which to build your job hunting. It must be easy to read, look presentable, have good spelling and grammar. Plus be tailored to the job description every single time you apply for security jobs.
  2. Your cover email should be one or two paragraphs maximum. It’s an introduction, not your life story.
  3. Let every single person that you know who is doing the well paid job that you want, know that you are available to work. The easiest way into security jobs is through a friend or peer.
  4. Look for security jobs in areas where others are not looking. On the employer’s website, or with niche recruitment agencies for example. Don’t forget cold calling. It can be very effective as no one does it anymore.
  5. Do not use Facebook or WhatsApp to find employment. The better paid roles are not advertised in this way. If you do this, all that you are doing is fighting with the masses for entry level wage security jobs.
  6. Network, network, network! It’s a phrase that you hear all the time. But very few people do it effectively. You must get out there and meet face to face those people who have the ability to offer you well paid security jobs. If not, you’re just another email.
  7. Watch your mouth on social media. Your social media presence can be as important as your first impression at an interview for security jobs. If you are using social media to find employment, then you must come across professional at all times.
  8. Re-engage with your network. Sending your updated CV to people you’ve already worked with is a great way to re-introduce yourself. But make it engaging. For example, “I haven’t seen you posting on social media as much, I presume you’re having a busy summer season!”. I’ve updated my CV if you have any vacancies coming up with the team.
  9. Let it go! If you are sending the same CV out in the same way, and not getting any replies, it’s for a reason. You either need to reformat and reword your CV, improve your applications, or change the sort of people who you are sending your CV to. How many people do you see complaining that they never get a reply to their application. Ok – so what have you done about it!
  10. Pick up the phone! Less than 1% of people follow up their security jobs application with a phone call. So all you need to do to be in the 1% is pick up the phone. Something like – Hi, I sent my CV to you two days ago, I was hoping you had some time to talk about the role.
